Danbarry Cinemas

Local friends! Sometimes I don’t know what to write about on this dear blog of mine. After starting my little rethrifted shop, I realized that Theo and I do have something to offer in area of money saving. We live on a very tight budget, and therefore do whatever we can to save money in all aspects of our lives. I decided that it might be beneficial to review different events, locations and restaurants that we have been too. Maybe after reading my review you will be able to also go and save money, or maybe you will decide to skip it and that it is not worth being *that* frugal!

Theo took me out on a date night two weeks ago. He planned a dinner and a movie (The Hunger Games, finally!). Unfortunately, the line was super long at Olive Garden, so we ended up getting Thai take out so we could make it to the movie in time.

Theo found a nearby theater that only costs $3 per movie ticket. Yes, you read that right! $3 (And it’s $1.75 on Tuesdays!). Let me tell you a little bit more about this place.

It’s called Danbarry Cinemas, and there are several locations but I can only speak for the one in Huber Heights.

Danbarry Cinemas shows movies that are currently in theaters, but I don’t think that it ever has “opening night” movies. So if you are DYING to see that movie the night that it comes out….this place is not for you. However, if you are looking to see a movie before it’s in Redbox/Family Video…this is the place for you. I mean, $3 is pretty much the cost of renting a movie at Redbox or Family Video!

If you are not a regular blog follower, you must know this about Theo and I: We love a good bargain, and we are fairly laid back people. I guess we are REALLY laid back. So keep that in mind when I tell you about our experience at this particular theater.

Theo looked up the online reviews for this place, and many of them mentioned that you get what you pay for. Some people had major complaints about the cleanliness of the theater and the professionalism of the workers. Some people raved about the amazing cost of a movie. After going there, I think I do agree that you get what you pay for. But, hey…$3.

We arrived about 10 minutes before the movie started, and the first thing that I notice is that the area around the theater is not horrible. I was expecting a $3 movie to be a “rougher” area, but it really didn’t seem like it was. We purchased our tickets, and I begged Theo to buy me some popcorn. You guys…whatever you do, do.not.give.in to popcorn at a movie theater. Any movie theater, but especially this one. It was $5 for a bag of popcorn the size of a microwave bag. So, being the logical people that we were, we spent $7 on the medium bag of popcorn. $7. And it didn’t even taste that great. Plus, we had to wait in line FOREVER for our popcorn, as the wait staff was slow. We noticed that the popcorn machine out front was broken and they were going to the back and emerging with large bags of popcorn to put it in the warmer. I have no idea if they were even popping the popcorn there, or if it was already popped. So my two cents on that is to not buy popcorn there. So not worth it.

I went into the bathroom at the theater, and it was great! I mean…it was a public bathroom, but I didn’t feel like I was going to get some disease that only House could identify! The theater itself was…decent. It wasn’t sparkling clean and it was probably cleaned on a low budget, but again…I didn’t feel like I was in danger of contracting a disease.

The theater itself was small, and this particular showing of The Hunger Games was almost full. There was one family who brought their newborn and their 6 year old and sat right in the front row. The people behind us were all “Who brings a baby to a theater??!!??” and I was like, “Give them grace. Babysitters are nearly impossible to find and when you do find them you end up spending so much money that it pretty much isn’t worth it.” But whatever. I was more concerned about the 6 year old than the baby. But I don’t think that particular experience has anything to do with just this theater. I think that could happen at any theater.

The movie was great- great quality, great sound. No previews. We expected to have 15 minutes of previews and then start the movie, but there was not a single one. It was actually kind of nice to still have popcorn leftover 20 minutes into the movie!

So it all comes down to this question: Would I go there again?

Absolutely. But I wouldn’t buy any popcorn. The price just can’t be beat!

So that’s that! What questions do you have about this place? Have you been there before? What was your experience? Do you think that a $3 movie is worth it, even if the service isn’t the best?
