Essential Oils.

Where to begin?

I guess I will first begin with a disclaimer. I am (clearly, thank God), not a medical professional.  Anything I say in this post is my opinion and my personal experience, not the voice of a medical professional or a scientist who is studying these things. I cannot claim that essential oils ‘heal’ or ‘treat’ diseases. (The FDA is actually cracking down on what people are “claiming” about essential oils, so I have to be very careful to not say anything that will offend them. Ha! But really, I’m not only speaking from experience. That is it.)

So, that being said, please visit or to back up anything I’m saying.

Now….we shall begin the fun part!

My story with essential oils

I’ve heard lots of people talk about oils. I’ve heard some people swear by them, saying that they work. I’ve heard some people shove them down others throats. And I’ve heard LOTS of people who use them first and foremost as a business plan.

All those things really shut me down to EO’s. I hate the pressure and marketing that comes with multi-level marketing and I would turn and run the other way when someone mentioned that they used essential oils.

One day I remarked to Theo that I was actually really interested in EO’s for our family, but I was afraid to ask anyone about them out of fear of having a whole marketing plan and pressure, pressure, pressure to buy, buy, buy in order that someone could make commission. So I never asked anyone or said anything. No, thank you….I’d rather not have that pressure. It makes me resent the product and the person, yet feel guilty if I don’t buy. So then I buy out of guilt and resent the product even more. Anyone else with me on that?

Plus, there was always the price. Woweee, EO’s don’t come cheap!

And one day my friend Christi messaged me and asked me if I was interested. I balked immediately. Nope. Not getting into this. Until she went on and on about how much they have helped her and her family. And then….she offered to send me some for free. What? For FREE? This was my perfect chance to try out the EO’s, prove them wrong, and once and for all turn down all the people trying to sell the product. I never want to spend big bucks on something, only to find that it doesn’t even work. That’s just depressing.

So she sent me a lovely little package of lemon and lavender. And I set out to prove her wrong. I started looking up ways to use lemon and lavender. (The possibilities were endless, btw). I cleaned my kitchen with lemon and had to admit that it sparkled and smelled goooood. I put lavender on a bug bite and the itching stopped. I even mopped my hardwood floors with lemon and it just made me feel happy to have clean, good-smelling floors without any chemicals.

So I started to think that maybe these things did work. But I still wasn’t too convinced. Somehow Christi convinced me to sign up for an entire kit, and I nervously clicked the buttons, thinking I had probably just lost over a hundred dollars because I’m a sucker for not saying no.

My Physicians Kit arrived and I used some oils here and there. More bug bites, more kitchen and hardwood floors cleaning. A little put on my belly when I had cramps, a little put on Tera when she seemed to be getting sick. But nothing HUGE. I wasn’t sure I would ever share EO’s with anyone as I wasn’t passionate about them and the results. I could never share a product that didn’t work. That’s just ridiculous. But I decided to host a facebook party anyways. All I had to do was be there, and my upline would do all the work. So we planned a date and time that happened to be the day I was flying back from Florida. I traveled all day (with a baby), wrangled a baby on a flight, missed an entire meal, hadn’t had hardly any water and my head was KILLING me. I walked in the door 10 minutes before the party started and I thought my head would pound right off my shoulders. I took two Ibuprofen and nothing happened. I was chugging water, attending this facebook party while all I wanted was to lay down and sleep.

And then I thought of it: try some EO’s! Here I was promoting them, they were sitting two feet away from me, and I wasn’t even using them myself! So I looked up a headache remedy: peppermint and lavender. I rubbed a drop of lavender on my head. Nothing. Then I rubbed a drop of peppermint on my head. And it BURNED, let me tell you. I turned to Theo in panic mode and asked him if my skin was red and/or falling off. I was NOT expecting that. And then…as the burn faded, I realized that my headache had also faded. I was FLOORED. This is SO cool! One drop of peppermint actually relieved my headache?

And they rest is history.

My upline sent me the Modern Essentials book (pictured above), and I use it daily. Oh, your toe hurts? Let me look up what oils you can use on that! Oh, you got a bug bite? Let me look it up. Nausea, headache, depression? Let me look it up! I’m so excited to be learning more each day and sharing with people what essential oils are how they work.

So wait….what are essential oils and how do they work?

This is directly copied from the doTERRA website:

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health care practices.

Annnnd….how do they work?

Essential oils work with the body to address issues and root causes on a cellular level. They are not treating the symptoms, they penetrate the cells to address the root causes.

There are three ways to use essential oils: (also copied directly from the doTERRA website)

Essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air.

Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and many can be safely applied topically when used in conjunction with a carrier oil, such as Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions.

I’ve already mentioned several uses for lemon, lavender and peppermint…but there are so many more uses for essential oils. Allergies, heat, pet issues, sleep, depression, skin problems, hair problems…all of those can be aided with an essential oil!

Another disclaimer here is that I’m not overly knowledgeable with EO’s yet. There are some that should not be used during pregnancy. There are some that should not be used on children/babies. If you have sensitive skin or are a child, oils should always be diluted in water. I’m continuing to learn and I’m so thankful for those who are more knowledgeable about doTERRA who are always willing to answer a text or a message.

Now, there are lots of places that you can get your hands on essential oils. You can go to your local health food store. You can buy through one of the essential oils companies (doTERRA and Young Living are the two biggest ones). So why did I choose doTERRA?

Well, for one…doTERRA are Certified Pure Theraputic Grade. A lot of essential oils that you can get your hands on are cheaper because they have chemicals and additives. A lot of labels are allowed to market as being pure essential oils, but they simply aren’t. doTERRA oils are. I know when I buy a bottle of essential oils, I am getting a bottle of essential oils. Another thing that I LOVE about doTERRA is that they are fair trade. Many of the oils are grown in other countries around the world. doTERRA is committed to providing safe and provisional jobs to those who work on farming the plants that make the oils. This is HUGE, guys. There are so few companies in the US today that don’t take advantage of the poor in other countries. Plus, they have the word TER(R)A in them, sooo…that was pretty much my selling point 😉 (my daughters name is Tera, if you are just stopping by).

And that my friends is my little crash course into essential oils.

You may have noticed that I didn’t mention anything about making money from essential oils. Well, that is because that is honestly not my primary goal (and I’m still trying to decide if I should even make it a goal). There is always the option of making commission off of people who sign up under you and buy essential oils. But that is not what this blog post is all about…I simply wanted to SHARE with you what I have discovered about essential oils. I know that it is a LOT! But, it’s good stuff and I hope that you will not be afraid to ask me any questions.

I promise I won’t shove the whole doTERRA kit down your throat while simultaneously rubbing peppermint on your forehead, making you sign your life away on the dotted line, and pick-pocketing you for all you are worth.

I promise 🙂
