Outside the Frame: Scripture

Today’s prompt for Outside the Frame is to share some of your favorite Scripture. Perhaps it is a Scripture that is hanging in your home, or a Scripture that you have memorized, or a Scripture that you are clinging to in a hard time in your life. I cannot wait to read and be encouraged by what you guys share on here!!!

When I went to Sahel Academy from 6th-12th grade, we had to do weekly Scripture memory. We had to recite the memory verse to Miss Carriger, and we would be graded on our ability to recite the memory verses. At the time, I groaned about it, and often spent the lunch period before Bible cramming those memory verses into my head.

What I didn’t realize it that I would also be writing Scripture on my heart, and I can still recite from memory many of the verses that we had to recite to Miss Carriger. My senior year of high school, we memorized the entire book of James.

When I went to college and in my adult life since, I have known the importance of Scripture memory but have struggled with it SO MUCH. I have tried for years to do weekly Scripture memorization, but have not been very successful.

Since becoming a Mom, I have struggled a lot with loneliness, and in many ways it has worsened since become a foster Mom. I am a total extrovert, and my tendency is to seek encouragement, support and praise from people around me. I unfairly turn to social media as a way to receive this, and always end up feeling sad and empty…because people cannot fulfill me! I compare my lives to others and assume that they have so.much.support and praise, and it turns my heart green with envy and I then I struggle even more with my loneliness.

This year, God has slowly been speaking to me through this, teaching me that I while the body of Christ is build to support one another, I do not need to rely on them. I need to rely first and foremost on HIM, and trust HIM for the rest. I’m not “there”. I am only now starting to realize how much I need to work on this, what I need to purge from my life and what I need to add to my life.

One of the things that I really need to add is Scripture and the memorization of it. I need to write it’s words on my heart because in those lonely and difficult moments as a wife, Mom and foster Mom, I can turn to it and be comforted. Last year, I started meeting with a mentor and fellow Mom at my church, and we began to commit weekly Scriptures to memory. We have since stopped meeting (although she is very faithful to text me frequently!), but I have tried to continue on in Scripture.

I am currently working on memorizing Ephesians, and so many of the Scriptures throughout Ephesians have brought me great joy and comfort. Here are some of my favorite snippets from the book of Ephesians:

Ephesians 1:11-14:

11 In him we were also chosen,[e] having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 2:4-10

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

I would encourage you to read more of this wonderful book. You can grab your copy of Scripture, but you can also read, study and learn more about this book on Bible Gateway (love it!).

So what about you? What is your favorite Scripture, or a Scripture that is helping you through a hard or happy time in your life?
