10 Kids Books We Are LOVING Right Now

Does anyone else feel like they read the same 5 books for weeks on end?

Kids LOVE repetition and its how they learn best (have you ever answered the same question 30 times in one afternoon?). So when our kids ask us to read the same book ((again)), it’s really, really good for their brains and development when we say YES.

But if you are anything like me, you are so tired of the same books…especially if they are…not exactly full of good content. I’m just saying. There are published books out there that probably should not have been published. And somehow…my kids ALWAYS pick those books from the library.

I figured that some of you might be stuck in the same rut of reading the same books that feel like a total waste of ten minutes. Instead, I’ve complied of list of 10 books that my kids love….that I actually love, too!! We have so much fun with these books and I have never once hidden these under the mattress or behind the bookshelf (cough cough I would NEVER do such a thing..)

My Heart is Like a Zoo

This one is simple and the illustrations are so eye-catching! All the animals are hearts configured into the shapes of the animals. The wording is very simple and repetitive, and uses some great descriptive language! This is one that Tera has almost completely memorized!

The Garden, The Curtain and the Cross

This book reminds me a lot of The Jesus Storybook Bible. It’s a beautiful story of the gospel unfolded through the pages with beautiful illustrations and kid friendly wording. I will admit that I cried the first time I read this book! It’s also the perfect book to read for Easter!

Hippopposites

I LOVE books that leave me feeling even smarter after I have finished reading this. This is a “simple” book with some big words and some fantastic description words. It goes through various opposites- some simple (like “big and small”) and some a lot more advanced (like “opaque and transparent”). Honestly, though, I love it when adult concepts are brought into kid books! Kiah also loves this one because it has some pages with texture.

Never Touch a Dinosaur

I bought this book for Kiah, and I’ve caught all four of our family members “reading” this book. It’s seriously the ultimate touch and feel book because the pages are made with different silicone textures. Honestly, this book is so fun to touch that I don’t even know what the story is about!

Wherever You Are

I cannot get through this book without sobbing. I don’t know if it would affect me as much if I wasn’t a foster Mom who has said goodbye. But if you are a foster Mom who is saying goodbye, or if you know a foster Mom who is saying goodbye, THIS BOOK WAS MADE FOR THEM. It would also make a great high school graduation gift, or even Kindergarten graduation. Basically, the book is all about how no matter where in the world the child goes, a mother’s love will always be with them. SOBBING.

Poke-A-Dot

This one comes in several different versions, and we have two of them. All of my kids love these books! It has little plastic bubbles (like the die in Trouble) that you can pop. We have one alphabet one and one counting one, and the child is supposed to pop the bubbles as they count/read the alphabet. It’s so fun! This book is so great on car trips (it’s not as loud as the Trouble game), and I also use this book as a timeout book. If my kids are getting so crazy or just needing some time alone, I set them up with this book and tell them to pop all the bubbles before they can get up. It’s a lifesaver!

Richard Scarry’s What Do People Do All Day?

This is such a fun book (and a LONG one, too!) It has sooo many pictures and is more of a look and find than a story. I loved Richard Scarry books as a kid, and I’m so glad that Tera loves this one, too! It’s really fun to have on car trips or just to sit and look at with her. It’s also a great rest time book because it takes her a looooong time to look through the whole thing!

Maple

This one is exactly my favorite, but it’s Tera’s current favorite, and it’s pretty cute, so it made the list. Maple is a little girl whose parents planted her a tree…but Maple needs a companion. Eventually she gets a little sister whose name is….. (I’ll let you order the book to find out what little sisters name is!) Hint: It’s also a tree.

When Africa Was Home

This has always been one of my favorite books, and even though my kids don’t really “get it”, I LOVE to read it to them. It’s about a little boy who lived in Africa until his Dad finished his work and moved them back to the United States. Everything was different in the United States. Finally, his Dad gets a new assignment and they head back to Africa…to home. I love this book because I feel like it was written about me. I think that any missionary kid/military kid/third culture kid who grew up in any region of Africa (yes, I know cultures are SO different across the continent) will relate to this book!

Llama Llama

We are big Llama Llama fans around here! I love the rhyming, the simple illustrations and I love how each story has a cute theme or morals. Tera has also been enjoying watching the new Llama Llama on Netflix!

So there you have it! Ten books that I’ve probably read a dozen times in the last week. What are you currently reading endlessly that you actually secretly love as much as your kids?

    Anything by Mo Willems!!

My daughter (also 3) has been asking for “Room on the Broom” (Julia Donaldson) over and over, but I really like it. It rhymes and has a great rhythm. I try to do silly voices for the animals, and she tries to copy me. Funny!
