Ok, friends! Here we go…my honest review of the Nugget Comfort.
First, what is a Nugget? Well, it’s a couch. Or better yet…it’s a couple couch cushions. They can be used in a million different ways including to sit on, to sleep on, to lounge on, to build forts with, to make a slide out of, etc. Basically, it had endless open-ended play options. It has a thick, foldable cushion (on the bottom in the photo), a thinner foldable cushion (on the top in photo) and two small triangular cushions. The photos on the website are amazing and I’ve heard nothing but good things about this product, so I finally decided to buy it for the kids as their Christmas present. Let me tell you something. This thing isn’t cheap. But my kids LOVE to pretend play and build and I figured it would be the PERFECT gift for them!
In fact, this thing is so popular that when I went to order it in NOVEMBER, it said that it would arrive sometime before June of 2021! It did take a few months, but it finally arrived at the beginning of March. The kids were SO EXCITED! It came in a big box and as we cut away the plastic, it puffed right up.
At first, they weren’t sure what to do with it, but as I showed them a few configurations, they started to understand how to play with it. It was so fun!
And then…the excitement wore off. After about 20 minutes. And since then, my kids have not had any interest in the thing. Like, zero. Truthfully, I knew I hyped it a little too much….but the amount of underwhelm was shocking to even me.
We kept trying. I would pull it out each day and put it somewhere easily accessible. They would ask me to set it up into different configurations, and would play it in for a few minutes before hopping over to our real couch and setting up all the tiny couch pillows as a fort. I began to get frustrated that I would always have to be the one to move it around to make their objects. I had imagined them playing with it and setting it up for themselves and being creative and imaginative.
I polled my IG followers what I could be doing wrong, and got some great suggestions
- Put it out in the open somewhere. The kids needs to see it to play with it. Don’t store it away in a room or a closet
- Buy two- the options become even more endless and there ends up being less fighting!
- Spend a solid week or so playing WITH them to kickstart their brain into thinking about it.
I was not about to drop another $220 on another one, so I decided to rearrange their bedroom so that the Nugget could be out in the open. One night Ezra was up all night, and I slept on it…which was fine. Better than the floor, but not as great as my own bed! Theo and I tried to show the kids some fun ways to play with it.
But they had ZERO interest. And I mean ZERO. I gave myself a time limit on how long we would keep it before I decided to resell it. The time came with still no interest and so I listed it for sale and promptly resold it. Hallelujah.
So, some final thoughts:
- I still think its a fabulous invention. I think that any toy or item that encourages open-ended play is fantastic (if the kids actually play with it LOL). It’s a quality product and while $220 is a lot, if it encourages endless play and collaboration, I highly recommend it!
- It’s still a bit pricey, in my opinion. When people recommend I buy two, I said NO WAY. That’s gonna be the price of Tera’s first car, not a play couch. HAHA.
- It didn’t work for us. But the good news is…it was easy to resell! These things are hot on the market right now and while I did discount it a bit, it was not hard to find a taker. So if you are hesitating over the price, just know that it has a great resale value.
- I learned a good lesson. Sometimes hyped up things are great. Sometimes they are great for other people. And sometimes they are just not for us. I don’t regret buying it, but I’m glad I decided to let it go. For a few weeks, I really wanted to force it because EvErYbOdY else’s kids love it. But it just wasn’t a good fit for our family, and I’m so happy in knowing that and letting it go!
P.S. Since I sold it three days ago, the kids have not noticed or asked even one time about it. HAHAHA.
So, tell me? Do you have a Nugget? Do your kids play endlessly with it? Or are they more like mine…zero interest?
