Finding Peace in My Day

A couple weeks ago, a bunch of bloggers that I follow did a link-up on this topic. I really enjoyed reading the responses and even though I missed the link-up, I thought I would add in my own response to the question!

I almost laughed when I saw this prompt, because I am not sure that my daily life has much peace at all. With four kids and three jobs between the two adults, I’m pretty much always “on”. In fact, I also almost cried when I saw this prompt, because I often *wish* I had just a bit more peace.

But, as in all things in life, this is a season. There have been seasons in my past where I have had more peace, and I know that there will be more seasons in my future where there will be unending times of peace.

And one big thing that I realized as I reflected on this is that I sometimes mix up peace and quiet. Yes, sometimes they do go hand in hand, but they are actually two different things. It’s possible to have peace in my day even if I very rarely have quiet.

As I reflected a bit more on it, I wondered if there is anyone else out there like me who feels like maybe everyone else is achieving peace because they have different life circumstances. And maybe they need some encouragement that peace can be found even in the midst of very busy seasons.

So here are some ways I find peace in my day:

  • Waking up early and having my quiet time with just my bedside lamp on while the rest of the house sleeps
  • Making my bed
  • Going out to the chicken coop and collecting beautiful, fresh-laid eggs
  • Hanging laundry out on the line or taking it down in the cool of the evening
  • Reading out loud to my kids while they eat their lunch
  • Walking out to the mailbox to check the mail
  • Vacuuming the carpet and having those fresh, clean lines
  • Sitting in my classroom while the kids are at lunch/recess and letting myself feel the air particles settle after the chaos of 18 six year olds have left the room
  • Putting on a podcast and folding laundry in my bedroom
  • Walking around the back field of our property
  • Playing the piano
  • Going for a run
  • Wednesday family hikes
  • Monday evenings after we visit the library when everyone piles on the couch and looks at our library book haul
  • Finishing a book and physically moving all the TBR books up one space on my bookshelf
  • Putting on a podcast in my AirPods and listening while cleaning or doing chores
  • Reading “just one more chapter” after everyone else has fallen asleep
  • And let’s not forget the most important kind of peace, the kind that is described in Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you”.

Turns out, I actually have more peace in my day than I thought I did! Sure, all of these things are little things that take just a few minutes, but they all do add up! When I choose to look for peaceful moments…I am able to find them!
