Hodgepodge 8/19- Winging It

Linking up with Joyce for this week’s Hodgepodge! Go check out her link for more blogs that join in on the fun.

From this Side of the Pond

1. August 19th is National Aviation Day…do you like to fly? Last time you were on an airplane? The date is chosen in honor of the history and development of aviation, and celebrated on the birthday of Orville Wright. Have you ever been to the Kitty Hawk area of North Carolina? The city of Dayton in Ohio (their birthplace)

Who knew? I think I enjoy flying…I always fill a little bit nervous about it (it doesn’t make sense in my head, no matter how much someone explains it to me!), but it’s also exciting and so efficient. The last time I flew was in January when I went down to Florida for a quick sisters trip. The trip back was incredibly nerve-wracking because we flew in just as a huge winter storm was barreling down on Ohio. The pilot flew SO FAST and the turbulence was WILD. I’m pretty sure we were one of the last flights in before they closed the airport!

I have driven through the Kitty Hawk area, but I don’t remember learning much about flight there.

And I happen to live in the suburbs of Dayton, OH, and we are very proud of our connections to the Wright Brothers :). The US Air Force Museum is also here and it is INCREDIBLE. It’s also completely free. I’m not even into that type of thing, but I love going to the museum and seeing all of the different aircrafts- from first flight to space flight. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend it!

2. In what area of your life do you tend to ‘wing it’? Is this an area you should be winging?

I feel like I’m kinda winging it in parenting and homesteading. Half the time I don’t think I know what I’m doing, but I’m just trying to do my best. Sometimes it really works out – and sometimes it’s a total disaster! As we enter into a new school year and are trying to get our bearing on a new routine, I’m especially feeling this!

3. A favorite book, song, or movie that relates to flight in some way?

We are currently reading The Twenty-One Balloons as a family read-aloud, and we are hooked. It’s about a man who decided he wanted some peace and quiet so he outfitted a hot air balloon to fly around by himself. But then the balloon crash lands on an island….that is as far as we have gotten, but so far it’s intriguing!

4. Soft serve, gelato, sherbet, frozen yogurt, or good old fashioned ice cream…what’s your pleasure? Your favorite flavor? How often do you indulge?

Would you believe me if I said that I don’t have much of a sweet tooth? From this list, ice cream is my favorite, but they all sound good! I could also just skip dessert of any type and enjoy my nightly popcorn snack haha!

5. I never get tired of______________________.

The first week of school energy! There really is nothing like it!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Speaking of flight/pilots, have any of you heard this story on the news? I actually know this man, and I’m planning on posting more about this whole situation on Friday, but I thought these prompts were perfect for sharing that one of our mission pilots who was kidnapped and in captivity for almost 10 months was RELEASED last week! Praise the Lord!

I will be interested to hear more about the pilot. Thank goodness he was rescued. I’ll bet he has some harrowing stories to tell. I have not been to the AF museum in years. You guys should check out Carillon Park. There are a few buildings to walk through and so much history to read about.

Oh I think parenting is one area where we all kind of wing and it and just hope for the best so often! I often felt like homeschooling was a whole lot of winging it too– I mean I planned out curriculum but our days? Those often did not go according to any sort of plan at all and many of our curriculum materials were abandoned 1/2 way through the year but I guess it worked!

Totally reckless and foolish to go to any third world country where militant or rebel groups are operating. I spend a lot of time in the Gulf and it’s common knowledge that there are just some places that westerners aren’t welcome… Especially with what warmonger Trump is doing with these illegal wars. Better to do charity at home.
