Starucca Viaduct

When we were in NEPA for my Grandmother’s funeral, I wanted to take some time to stop and see the Starucca Viaduct.

The Starucca Viaduct is a historical (but still active) train bridge located in Susquehanna, PA. When my Grandpa was a boy, his family lived in the house almost directly under the train bridge, so it also has a bit of a family connection to us.

It was built in 1847 out of stone cut locally. It is over 1000 ft long, 100 ft high and is only 25 ft wide at the top. It took 800 workers a year to build this bridge! It is crazy because it’s literally in the middle of nowhere, but it is so breathtaking. I felt as in awe of this bridge as I did the next day when I walked around NYC and saw the iconic landmarks.

Our family has passed around this painting by Jasper Francis Cropsey of the Starucca Viaduct. My brother and SIL currently have it in their home, and so we wanted to get some pictures of the bridge with them in it. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to adventure around the backwoods of PA to try to find the exact overlook featured in the painting, but one day it would be fun to find that spot!

The pictures absolutely do not do it justice, but just look at the how the telephone poles and the houses look like toys next to it! We were hoping to see a train go over it, but we couldn’t seem to find a train schedule.

If you ever find yourself in the backwoods of Susquehanna, PA, I highly recommend this spot! The bridge is incredible and they even have some picnic tables set up for those who would like to have a picnic there!
