Wednesday Hodgepodge

I’m joining up with the Wednesday Hodgepodge link-up! The questions are always so fun (and random!) and I love these little journal-type prompts, plus it’s really fun to read what everyone else is answering!

1. On July 29th 1957 The Tonite Show premiered with Jack Parr as it’s host. This marked the beginning of the modern day talk show. Do you watch any daytime or late night talk shows today? Do you have any thoughts on the hubbub surrounding the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, or are you more in the camp of ‘who is Stephen Colbert?

I do not watch hardly any TV in my current season! I also never watched any of this type of thing growing up. Because of that I don’t have much of an opinion on the whole hubbub surrounding the cancellation of the show. However, humble brag here: I DID actually know about it because it was mentioned on the news podcast that I listen to. I always feel like I’m in the loop after I listen to this daily 10 minute podcast!

2. What’s the best part of your day?

I honestly love the evenings in our home. We eat dinner, then do our chores, then usually do something together as a family. Last night we went for an evening swim and played Marco Polo and I felt like a kid again. After our evening activity, there is the chaos of bedtime (not necessarily my favorite)- I typically read to the kids, we do our family devotions and sing a hymn together and then put the kids in bed. Then I usually climb into bed and read for an hour or so or chat with Theo.

That all sounds really idyllic and the truth is that I’m often harried, impatient and ready for the day to be done. But if I really step back and reflect on the best part of my day- it’s that one.

3. What’s something your generation does that you actually dislike?

I wish that we were better at just showing up for each other in person. I don’t feel like this is something that we do- I usually have to schedule with my friends months in advance to even get together with them. I wish there was more “just dropping by” or even just leaving a little pick me up on someone’s porch. Even as a type this, I know how many of my dear friends would cringe if I suggested just stopping by without planning it in advance haha. But maybe I’ll start going first 🙂

4. When you cook do you clean as you go, or clean it all up once you’re finished cooking? What’s the last thing you cooked/baked in your own kitchen?

I don’t have a dishwasher, so I usually do the dishes once after lunch. While I’m prepping dinner, I usually leave a big mess but also kind of clean as I go- if by cleaning we mean dumping all the dirty things in the sink and putting stuff in the trash/compost. Then I usually wash the dishes again before dinner when I’ve finished cooking. After dinner, one of the kids does dishes (we rotate chores) and it makes it way easier for them if I’ve already washed/cleared all the dinner prep dishes.

5. Sum up your July in ten words or less.

Family Reunions. Hot. Adjustment to a new life schedule. Unmet Expectations.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Next week is back to school mode! We don’t actually start until the 19th, but as a teacher next week is when I really start prepping my classroom and meet my students! All summer I have not felt ready but yesterday when I went to school to drop something off, it energized me and I remembered how much I love teaching and being in our school community. So, I’m not quite ready but I finally have a glimmer of hope that I may actually feel excited to go back.

See, this is how I know I’m not a teacher- the idea of heading back to the classroom just as a sub does not give me warm and fuzzies!! But I’m glad it does for you- you are definitely doing your calling. Your July sounds like it was a good one!
