Monthly Musings: How We Summer

  1. Favorite thing about Summer 2025?

Having a pool! This has been a total game changer…the kids spend hours swimming almost every single day, and they have really mastered some great swimming skills! I am so thankful to our friends who gifted us this hand me down pool!

2. Favorite thing you ate this summer?

Good food hasn’t really been a theme this summer, which is ok! I guess I would say that I really enjoyed my Door Dashed meal from Piada when Theo and the kids were off on their backpacking trip. It hit just right since I didn’t have to cook, clean OR even leave my house to eat it!

3. Did you see any summer movies?

Not a single one. Although we do want to watch How to Train Your Dragon – is that even in theaters still?

4. What books did you read this summer?

Now THAT is something that I did do this summer! I’ve read about 25 books and some of them were fantastic! Some of my favorites were:

The Correspondant

The Love Haters

Beach House Rules

The Glass Castle

The Let Them Theory

Tangled Up in You

Don’t Make Me Pull Over

5. Ready for fall or hold on to to summer?

There is absolutely not a single bone in my body that is ready for summer to be over! I am starting to feel ready for back to school season, and having a more structured routine, but I’m not ready for the chilly days and nights and the weather to change!

6. What is different about your summer schedule than the rest of the year?

Well, I’m a teacher…so lots. During the summer I am a full time stay at home Mom. Which is hard a job! During the rest of the year, I teach in a classroom two days a week and homeschool my kids 3 days a week. While adding working hours to my schedule sounds overwhelming, it usually actually ends up being “easier” in many ways because my kids have more structure and our routine is more set.

7. How do you take a break/relax in the summer?

I love to read a book while my kids are playing in the pool! I also LOVE after a long, hot day outside when we all come inside- we usually tackle clean the house and then the kids will watch a movie while I make dinner and listen to a podcast. That feels so relaxing to me!

8. Any trips still on the calendar for this summer?

Nope! We traveled plenty this summer, although not much of it was relaxing!

Memorial Day Weekend- I traveled to SC for a funeral

Last Weekend in May- we all traveled to my grandpa’s funeral with an overnight stop at Niagara Falls

June 20-25- Theo went to a work conference in Utah

July 6-10- We had our DeVavle Family Reunion

July 16-20- We had our Hines Family Reunion

July 24-26- Theo had a guys weekend away

And now we are gearing up for the school year!

9. Any Summer Concerts this year?

None!

10. When does summer end in your world?

Officially, our first day of school is August 19. But we have teacher work days on the calendar starting August 4th. But, honestly, as long as the pool is still open and we can be outside all day long, it still feels like summer to me.

Yay for a new pool! That is a fabulous summer favorite!! I really enjoyed Beach House Rules, The Glass Castle, & tangled up in you too. I am impatiently waiting for The Haters Game to come in at our library. Did you know that Tangled up in you is part of a series of sorts? Each novel is by different authors but have a shared Disney/fairy tale retelling. They’re all pretty cute.
