Happy Friday!! We made it through our first week of school! And boy was it a doozy! I really want to spend this blog post focusing on the highlights, but there was also some really low lows this week. It felt like things were falling.apart and it’s honestly almost comical how much went awry for our family.
On Thursday, we got back from our wonderful family reunion/vacation. On Friday we were hit with an unexpected bill that really hurt. On Saturday, Theo’s truck almost died on the way to work. He tried to fix it, but it also almost died on the way home, too. On Sunday he made it to work but the whole truck broke down just as he pulled into the lot.
On top of all this, Ezra had been up all night coughing and coughing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. On Sunday I decided to ask a family friend who is a doctor if he could just listen to his lungs and advise us on what to do. He gave a good listen and advised us to pursue some medication and watch for pneumonia. As I got back into the van to drive back home, the van wouldn’t start. No, I am not kidding. That evening, Theo drove the truck (limping along) to the mechanic and I drove to the mechanic to pick Theo up, then drove to my parents house for dinner. After dinner we all loaded into the van (our one working vehicle) and it wouldn’t start. Of course, the jumper cables were in the truck that were at the mechanic! We walked to all of my parents neighbors and no one had jumper cables, so my Dad and Theo drove to Walmart to buy a battery pack with jumper cables to start the van. We got home on Sunday night and Theo took the van to work on Monday- but he had to try many times to get it to start in the morning! What are the chances that both our (normally fully functioning, we’ve never had a problem with either of them) vehicles would die ON THE SAME WEEKEND?
Anyways, a new alternator and a new battery later, and both vehicles are back to functioning!
Later in the week, we did end up taking Ezra back to the pulmonologist where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. My poor buddy! His first week of Kindergarten and he has to deal with pneumonia! And honestly, Theo and I were up every 1-2 hours at night for a week helping him deal with his cough. I think that was the hardest part of the week by far!
Ok, I’m done complaining unloading all of my woes now….let’s move on to some favorites from the week!
Monday

I know it’s crazy that Monday is a favorite, but it was! I was feeling really emotional about school starting and maybe some grief over summer ending. Theo had the van so I couldn’t go anywhere that day, and it was the most beautiful and peaceful day at home. The kids played so well, Ori took a great nap, and I spent some time in my sunflower field. It was like this long, gentle hug that I needed before diving into the school year!
First Day Teacher Jitters

Although it’s stressful, I just LOVE the first day of school! The fresh outfits, the fresh shoes, how everyone arrives early with nerves and excitement and anticipation. Seeing my previous students in bigger classes. Watching my own kids step into a whole new world of learning. It’s exhausting, but it’s so beautiful.
Working with Friends

I’m so thankful that I get to work with people that I now call friends. Everyone on our lower school team is amazing and I’m so thankful to work alongside them! I’m especially thankful that I get to teach with Corinne this year. She’s like a sister to me and we both get to teach first grade. Our boys are together in the baby room, so we put them in matching outfits for the first day of school. SO CUTE!
First Day Pictures

Ezra started Kindergarten, Kiah started 2nd grade and Tera started 5th grade! 5th grade in our building is officially middle school, and she gets a locker, five teachers and needs to learn how to change classes. So far it has not fazed her one bit and she’s handling every detail like a champ!
First Volleyball Game

Tera got on the volleyball team this year and this week was also their first game! I was nervous going in because it doesn’t seem like my girl is big enough to hit a volleyball over the net, but we LOVED watching the game and there were some really great volleys happening! I can’t believe my child is old enough to play sports that are actually competitive/entertaining and fun to watch- it’s a whole new world!
Last Bouquets from the Sunflower Field

In case you missed it, I’ve really enjoyed having a sunflower field this year. Hahaha. Everyone is tired of me talking about it, but I just can’t quit! Wednesday I was feeling a bit overwhelmed and I decided to go out there and deadhead and cut some blooms. Well, I ended up with enough cuttings to make some bouquets and the kids and I decided to put together one for each teacher. It was so fun taking this huge box of bouquets to school to gift to all my kids amazing and hard working teachers! And while my field is still beautiful right now, I think that we are coming to the end of its bloom time.
And that’s a wrap on this week’s favorites (and some not so favorites)!!

Oh you poor thing! Those lows are some pretty big lows! However, even with such a stressful week you managed to find some great favorites. Those sunflower bouquets are just beautiful.
