Spring Break: The Bookends

Today is officially back to our routine after a wonderful Spring Break. Theo took vacation time and so we were all able to enjoy time together as a family, have some fun, and get some things done!

We took a little trip to Red River Gorge, KY for some good hiking. I will recap that trip in a different blog post. So this post will be all about the three days before the trip and and the four days after the trip- the bookends of our Spring Break!

We woke up on Friday morning and dove right into a HUGE house project- rearranging our whole house. I’m not even kidding- we moved almost every single piece of furniture at least once. Our house is pretty small (1300 square feet) but it does have this rather large bonus room where the garage used to be. The house has three tiny bedrooms- Theo and I in one, the two middle boys in one, and Tera and the baby have shared the last bedroom. For obvious reasons, this was getting old and everyone was feeling cramped. So Theo and I decided to move our bedroom to the bonus room on the other side of the house. The two middle boys get to share the biggest bedroom, Tera finally gets her own room, and Orion gets the smallest room to himself. This has been SO GREAT bedroom-wise- finally, we have some breathing room. The only major problem is that we are all accustomed to entering and exiting the house from the doorway that is now in our bedroom. Haha. So, we are trying to break that habit and also make sure to inform guests before they arrive that they need to start using the *other* door so that they aren’t shocked to walk right into a bedroom. Life is a little weird, but we just gotta do what works for our family.

Anyhow, I don’t actually have any pictures of the final reset, mostly because it’s taken a while for the dust to settle and for me to find new homes for everything. Perhaps that will be its very own blog post.

On both Sundays of Spring Break, we went to church as a family! It’s my favorite thing having Theo home from work on Sundays. Kiah has this Flat Kiah project where he has to take pictures of everywhere that flat Kiah went during Spring Break. Flat Kiah also came with us to church.

One thing that made Spring Break so amazing was the weather. I sat outside with a book and cried a little bit. It’s just so overwhelming to feel that sunshine and realize just how dark and cold it has actually been for the last 5 months.

On Monday morning, I took my Dad to his radiation treatment. He is just over halfway through his cancer treatments, and the prognosis is looking good. He has to go get radiation every weekday, Monday through Friday. It’s not a long process, but it takes so much time to drive there and back each day, so I volunteered to cover a shift to give my Mom a break and to go support my Dad.

As soon as I got back from taking my Dad, we loaded up the car and headed off to KY! I will write more about that in a later post. This made me laugh, though. Who was I kidding taking 10 books with me for a 2 day trip when I knew I would be hiking 80% of the time and NOT reading?

We left Monday afternoon and got back late Wednesday night. Thursday and Friday were mostly chores/errands and getting our house settled. I got in a long run with a friend. We picked up some chicks from Rural King. The weather was absolutely stunning- just PERFECT. I apparently took zero pictures during those two days.

Friday evening my in-laws arrived in town so Saturday was spent with them! Theo, the kids, and his Dad left early on Saturday morning to go pick up our new set of piglets! Then since it was a rainy day, we all went to a browse a thrift store and went out to eat at Applebee’s for lunch. We rested some in the afternoon before everyone went out to the Dollar Store to get some birthday decorations for Ori, while I stayed home and started working on dinner. My parents also came over for dinner and we celebrated Orion turning 2! Can you even believe it?

Sunday was Ori’s actual 2nd birthday, but since we celebrated on Saturday evening, it was more of a quiet day at home. We went to church, said goodbye to the grandparents, rested at home, I went into school to get some copies done and make sure that I’m ready for school this week, and we crashed hard on Sunday night.

And that’s it for our Spring Break- the bookends! I’ll be back later this week recapping our trip to Red River Gorge (spoiler: it was AMAZING!)

Your break looks so nice! Glad the weather cooperated and yes, I was a little jealous that I spent $$ to escape to Florida and our weather was basically the same, lol. My son and his friends have gone several times to Red River Rock. I want to go and I’m sure after reading your post about it, I will want to go even more :).
