Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What does adventure mean to you?

According to the dictionary, adventure means:

“an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity”

I think I like that definition, although I’ve never thought about our adventures as being hazardous. We are a family who loves a good adventure! I often think of adventure as being unpredictable and thrilling. But, it’s not always some big and crazy thing. Sometimes an adventure is just going for a peaceful hike through the woods.

2.  What are your thoughts on tipping? What businesses or service providers do you regularly tip? Do you resent being asked if you’d like to add a tip? What about when a suggested amount is presented?

I am a terrible tipper, I will admit it. I always tip, but it’s usually the lowest amount required of me. Honestly…it’s because I’m cheap, and we rarely ever eat out. We really try to save our money and eat out maybe 1x a month? I recently saw a rant that was arguing the point that if you can’t afford to tip, you shouldn’t be eating out. I guess I really have to fight that mindset in myself, because I think that this argument brings up a fair point and I do need to consider this when I eat out. Now, when it’s a restaurant that I’m ordering from the counter and not being served a meal? I don’t tip. And this question has really led me to believe that I may need to change my mindset around tipping!

3. I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream…do we? Is ice cream a favorite treat at your house? What’s your favorite flavor? Regular, soft serve, gelato, sherbet, or some sort of non-dairy version of ice cream…what’s your pleasure?

We do love a good serving of ice cream! My favorite is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. We have a local place called Whit’s that serves frozen custard, and that is kind of our go-to celebration outing.

4. What’s your ‘back in my day, we____________________ ‘ story or saying?

This made me laugh, because just in the past year I have caught myself a couple times saying something along the lines of “back in my day…” and then I catch myself saying it and realize how old I sound! I guess young 30s is officially not “young” anymore.

Most recently, the “back in my day” that I notice is that young children these days don’t know what “scrap paper” is (you know- paper that has been used on one side, but still has a perfectly good blank side that is PERFECT for note jotting, to-do list making, paper airplane folding, and drawing practice). NONE of my first graders ever know what I’m talking about when I tell them to grab a piece of “scrap paper”. And then when they finally do grab the paper from the correct pile, they come to me extremely confused and tell me that the paper has something already on one side! Well, yes…it’s SCRAP PAPER, CHILDREN! The best I can figure out why it’s not a “thing” anymore is because we don’t really use paper all that often at home- we aren’t printing much, or faxing.

Well, you better believe all of my students know what “scrap paper” is by the time they leave my classroom haha!

5. Somehow this is our last Hodgepodge in the month of June. Next week’s Hodgepodge lands in July. Wow. Sum up your June using three adjectives.

June: CHANGES; WEATHER; WEEKENDS.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

This summer has been a big adjustment for our family! Theo changed careers at the end of May, and we were hoping for a slow summer before the school year ramps up…but it has not been slow for him at all. This isn’t bad, it has just taken some adjusting for us all. We have had some homestead and sports team disappointments this week, but we have also had some amazing things happen- like getting VIP tickets to the air show and being gifted a pool!

I’m linking up with Joyce for her weekly Hodgepodge questions. I always love these questions and am so thankful she writes them each week!
