Well, once again, I dropped off the face of the blogging planet. Obviously, my best excuse would be the whole broken elbow situation, but honestly I can still type just fine as long as my arm is propped up while I’m typing – turns out that typing requires more wrist movement than elbow movement.
But my other excuse is that Maycember is bearing down upon us and as a family with 6 people heavily involved in school, we are BUSY. And not gonna lie…I love it. I love Maycember. It’s my favorite time of the year. But there is not much margin for blogging!
I thought today I’d just break my silence with a little Hodgepodge entry- these questions are always so fun, and I love reading the answers from other bloggers! The questions are written an hosted by Joyce at From This Side of the Pond.
Here are the questions to this week’s Hodgepodge.

1. April 22nd is Earth Day…what’s the most ‘out of this world’ place on earth you’ve ever visited? Tell us something about it.
Ok, so…this is me at the “Aeroport de Tombouctou”, which is…the Timbuktu Airport. Yep, like the actual legendary Timbuktu.

This was 2008, and my bestie and boarding school roommate lived in Timbuktu with her family on their mission station. My Dad and I flew to visit them so my Dad could do some research in the libraries there and I got to hang with Joy for the day in Timbuktu. I honestly can’t even remember if we spent the night?
Definitely the most “out of the world” place I’ve ever been.

The sad thing is that the country of Mali (where Timbuktu is) and Niger (where I lived and grew up) are now entirely closed to westerners due to terrorist activity. It’s so sad that I will probably never get to go visit again.
2. A favorite quote, verse, or song lyric with the word earth in it?
The first thing that came to mind is Psalm 24
Psalm 24
Of David. A psalm.
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
2 for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.
3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not trust in an idol
or swear by a false god.[a]
5 They will receive blessing from the Lord
and vindication from God their Savior.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, God of Jacob.[b][c]
7 Lift up your heads, you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
The Lord Almighty—
he is the King of glory.
3. What’s the most trivial thing about which you have a strong opinion?
I’m totally stumped on this one. I have strong opinions about a lot of things, but they don’t feel trivial to me haha.
I guess that body noises shouldn’t happen in the same room as me, which is real tough as a boy mom x3. Please take your burping and tooting and do it in the other room. I hate it, and don’t want to be present for any of it. They cannot comprehend this. At all.
4. What’s your most commonly used kitchen utensil or tool? What’s the last thing you made using that tool?

We use this spatula on a daily basis.
Side note: why are two separate kitchen items both called spatula’s? Surely we could have two different names for two different tools. Or if you don’t call it a spatula, what do you call it?

If you google spatula, both images pop up…but google seems to refer to the stainless steel version as a “turner”.
And also, why in the world would someone spend $45 on a spatula (of either variety?1?)
5. Marilyn (Memphis Bridges) gave me a great book of 3000 questins, and I’m going to try to use one in our Hodgepodge every week. Here is today’s –
What is your greatest extravagance?
Have you seen the social media trend where people post that they are “rich in life because…” and then they share just the most basic parts of life that are really total beautiful extravagances? I guess that is where I am at in answer to this question. There is so much hard and honestly, we live a pretty simple life.
But my life is extravagant because I have a safe home with running water and electricity, I grocery shop every single week and buy what we need, I have a safe and healthy/fulfilling marriage, I have four healthy and delightful children, we have a healthy church family, we get to work and school in such an amazing and supportive environment. I guess my greatest extravagance is that if I really step back, I’ve got almost nothing to complain about.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
Two things:
- My elbow is healing so well! The first 10 days were very painful and difficult. And then…the pain faded and now (3 weeks out) I have almost no pain and have resumed normal function, for the most part. I still can’t really unbend my arm, and I do have significant pain if I get bumped or if I try to reach for something, but otherwise it’s been a very quick recovery
- Here’s what we’ve got coming up in the next 5 weeks: Vintage Market Days of Dayton/Cincy, the Walk for Life, end of the year playdate, half marathon, senior trip chaperones, two kids in drama performances, mothers day, preschool expo, high school graduation, senior grad parties, field day, last day of school, classroom cleanout, hosting a bonfire, hosting a farm day, baby piglets being born, hosting small group, baby bunnies born, baby chicks, my birthday, our anniversary, a Dayton Dragon’s Game….and I’m sure I’m forgetting something else!
Deep breath….I’ll probably see you guys at the beginning of June haha!
