It’s VBS week and the World Cup and I’m TIRED! I originally wrote the title of this post as “PodgeHodge” so there we are. haha.
Here are the questions to this week’s Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog, then hop back here on Wednesday (June 17th) to share your answers. See you there!

1. June 17th, 1994 was the day of the infamous O.J. Simpson car chase. What were you doing in 1994? I’m guessing somebody is going to tell me they weren’t born yet but that’s part of the fun of the Hodgepodge. Lots of generations are represented here.
I had just turned 3 in 1994, and my parents were missionaries in a remote village in West Africa, with no electricity. My Dad had a radio and he listened to BBC news every morning, so he probably heard the news on the radio.
This photo was probably more like 1996 or 1997, but that is me in our front yard. The stick cube box thing behind me is a bed. Every night we would lay the bed down flat and drag out mattresses outside and then hang up a mosquito net around the bed/mattress and sleep outside because it was way too hot to sleep inside!

2. What’s your favorite summer salad that isn’t the traditional tossed green lettuce kind of salad? Do you like fresh fruit in a salad (other than in a fruit salad of course)?
Mmmm how about a spinach/strawberry salad with poppyseed dressing? Here is a link to one!
3. Is chivalry dead? Should it be?
No, I don’t think that chivalry is dead. Perhaps it’s just the communities that I am involved in (mainly, school, church and family), but there are plenty of chivalrous men in those communities. I’m of the opinion that if you want to find it, you will focus on finding it. If I want to find mean, rude and entitled and un-chivalrous people, I will find them. But if I want to find kind, helpful and chivalrous people, I will find them.
Side note: can a woman be chivalrous?
4. Would you rather spend a week of your summer vacation in Hawaii or Alaska? Have you ever been to either? Are they two places you really would like to see? How do you feel about ‘Hawaiian pizza’ aka pineapple on a pizza? Have you ever eaten Baked Alaska?
Oh, this is a tough one! I think I would pick Alaska for my summer vacation. If the question was about a winter vacation, I would choose Hawaii for sure!
I have never been to either Alaska or Hawaii. I’ve been to around 30 states, but most of them are East Coast and midwest states, I haven’t been very far west (except for the one time my family drove to Washington State).
No to Hawaiian pizza- no, thank you!
I am honestly not sure what baked Alaska is, but I think that it’s maybe fish?
5. World Cup play is happening now…are you interested? Watching any matches? Did you or your children play soccer/futbol? There are eleven US cities hosting matches-
–Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York with the stadium in NJ, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle
along with three cities in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey)
and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver)-
You get free tickets to one of these matches. Which city do you choose? Tell us why.
WE HAVE WORLD CUP FEVER. Currently, the Argentina/Tunisia game is on as I write this. We are cheering for any West African country- Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cabo Verde – and then the USA of course, followed by any underdogs!!
I don’t care what city it is in, but I would love to watch a USA match or one of the above West African country matches. Philadelphia is the closest city to me, so that would be the most convenient one to get to!
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I have read some amazing books this month. This one is one of my favorite books of all time:

It’s about the team that was willing to go and pick up the US missionaries who had contracted Ebola while serving in Liberia. The story has a personal piece for me, as my Mom knows one of the missionaries who was infected. But even without that personal piece, No One’s Coming was an INCREDIBLE book, so well written- journalistic storytelling at its finest. Then I remembered that I had a book on my shelf written by one of the missionaries so I read that one real quick.

Baked Alaska is actually a dessert.. not sure how it got its name though. I have had it once but I don’t remember anything other than the waiters all bringing the desserts into the room while they were aflame. I’m guessing I wasn’t a huge fan if I can’t remember what it tasted like.
