Hodgepodge – Why Is This Hard

Here are the questions to this week’s Hodgepodge. Hop back here on Wednesday (June 3rd) to share answers with the world wide webbers. See you there!

1.What’s something you find extremely difficult that most people would say is simple?

It took me a really time to think through this question, and I almost abandoned this week’s hodgepodge for lack of a good answer.

But! I think I figure it out:

Resting.

Apparently some people can just sit down and rest? This is something I find incredibly difficult. If I am sitting down to “rest”, I am always looking for something “productive” to do while I rest.

Yep. That’s me.

2.  “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow fast in movies I  had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”

~F. Scott Fitzgerald

Does the season of summer make you feel this way? Elaborate.

Oh, absolutely! Summer feels like a totally “new year”, especially since I’m a teacher and I have four school aged kids, and my husband is a school administrator. The rhythm of our days is completely different in the summer. And I tell all my friends I’m a great summer friend- I’m not so much a great fall/winter/spring friend, though.

3. Pickles. Love ’em or no thank you? What’s your favorite type of pickle? What’s something you eat that definitely needs a pickle added?

I do like pickles but I never buy them. No one else in my family likes pickles, and I don’t really eat them *in* things. So if I’m at a potluck or somewhere that there is pickles, I will eat them, but I’m not going out of my way to have them.

4. Tis the season…do you know any June brides? Are there any weddings on your summer calendar? What’s your favorite movie wedding?

The days of us going to weddings every summer is over. There was a season of our lives that it felt like we were going to 5+ weddings every summer! Those days passed and then we were going to many, many baby showers. Now, the season of graduation parties has begun. There are not any weddings on our summer calendar this year.

We were just discussing at my nephew’s graduation that the Hines celebrations are going to start seriously amping up in the next few years. The oldest grandson graduated 3 years ago, then the next one graduated this year. Next year, we will have one, then the year after that one, and then it will start being 2-3 every year. And I’m sure weddings will start happening in there, too! There are officially 26 grandkids/cousins so we have LOTS of years of celebrations ahead of us!

My favorite movie wedding is 100%, hands down Father of the Bride. That is my favorite movie of all time!

5. June 1st is/was National Say Something Nice Day…say something nice here.

There are so many people fighting hard battles. I spent almost all day June 1st sitting in a chemo infusion center with my Dad as he got his first chemo treatment. My Dad is in good spirits, and my Mom is faithful by his side. He has a great support system. My heart broke for those who were in the treatment center alone (maybe it was their preference to go alone). I saw one woman who couldn’t have been any older than me. I know this seems like a Debbie downer thought, instead of a “nice” thought, but my point is to just smile at someone and lend a hand where possible. You never know what someone is walking through.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

It is finally starting to feel like summer over here! I’m starting to feel a little more stabilized in our summer routine and the livin’ is starting to feel a little easier/more free. We have some really fun stuff coming up this summer, and I’m excited to be able to enjoy the sunshine, the pool and the slower days without work or homeschool!
