I realize that I have a knack for making a simple topic quite complicated, but as I thought through this blog prompt, I didn’t have one succinct answer- I have several! Haha- “short story long” is kind of my personality type.
Our house is 1600 square feet- so not large my any means. It has 3 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen- and a “bonus” room. The bonus room is really what was originally a garage and was turned into an indoor room- but the people who did that somehow neglected to put any sort of venting into the room- so it gets no direct heat or AC respectively. So, it’s basically still a garage lol. Still, we like our house and appreciate all that it provides for us. We have SO MUCH more than millions of people around the world, and while I occasionally complain about the inadequacies of our house, overall I am so thankful that we have it, and that our family can thrive within it.
Which room of my house do I spend the most time in? Probably the kitchen. But the kitchen is actually my least favorite part room of the house. It’s actually not a terrible kitchen- it just isn’t built with maximum functionality. Like, I think the person who designed it had never actually spent any time in the kitchen? Anyways, despite its flaws, we spend a lot of time in the kitchen! We do homework here, we eat all our meals in here, we bathe all sorts of things in the sink (lol), we stand around and chat in here, we do a lot of chores in here- we mostly live life in here!

In the winter, my favorite room of the house is our living room. It’s where we have the wood burning stove and it’s SO cozy. We all spend any extra moments at home in the living room.

In the summer, our favorite room….is the outdoors. We are an OUTDOOR family, guys. We are outside almost all the time that we are awake. We are on the patio, or in the pool, or working in the barn, or just enjoying our property. This is why we put up with all of the inadequacies of the house- for the outdoor space! I shuffled through a lot of pictures and couldn’t find any that show other features of our outdoor space: we have an above ground pool, a trampoline, a playset, a stream, and ample space to just run around and be an outdoor family.

When I started blogging many years ago, one of my main messages was about how it’s the little, mundane moments that are really so glorious (hence my blog name). I know that my house isn’t “instagram worthy” – it’s small and not updated and I don’t even have a dishwasher. Out outdoors is beautiful but it’s a lot of work to maintain! But I hope that in sharing some of these little corners of our life that you feel encouraged that it doesn’t all have to be bigger and better and updated and modern to be safe and sweet and comfortable and beautiful. It matter more about the lives and attitudes and habits that are build inside the home than the actual amenities of the home itself.
